Christian Schad
Christian Schad has his own version of photograms and he has called them 'Schadographs.' He was around the time of 1918, which was the same year World War I which could of had an influence on his work. He was a German artist who lived August 21,st1894 – February 25th 1982. His work during 1915-1916 showed aspects of cubism and futurism. His 'Schadographs' are camera less with materials and random objects found on the streets and in garbage cans. He used the photogram process with light sensitive paper and a variety of objects. Schad lived through and after the war, but consequently his studio was destructed.
Analysis
In the photogram, I can see a religious necklace, a pair of sunglasses, an earing, a star and what appears to be a key chain. To describe it , it arranged clearly and has the theme of accessories as it includes jewelry and the glasses. If someone could not see it, I would describe as dark with refined images and that the objects used are also used in everyday situations to accessorize a persons outfit. The photogram is abstract.
The technique of making a photogram has been used to create the image. It reminds me items used when going to a posh outing or a day at the beach. There is only black and white tones, not many linear aspects but there is a texture which would be plastic as the objects are recognizable so you know how they are made. It is different from real life because is very abstract. The most interesting part is the object in the bottom corner as it is unrecognizable.
In the photogram, there is a lot of open space. The center is clustered but otherwise it is spacious. The most interesting part is the center because there is multi objects with different use of shapes. I would ask how difficult it was to position each object and then take the objects off the paper fast enough after the exposure to light.
I think the title should be 'Design' because the pieces together can add to something. I think it is a plan for something and I think this because of the arrangement and what is used. To be in the photogram would be strange yet spacious because there is few big objects.

Christian Schad creates photograms named ‘schadographs’ with different objects used to create them. In this piece, the objects used are letters, a wooden replica of a gun and round, circular shapes.
I like Schad’s work because he has made it his own and recreated the name. He interprets the work in different ways and personalises then in a different way to different artists.
I think the artists tried to make the piece abstract and random which makes it hard to understand what the piece is meant to be about.
Other examples of his work prove he uses abstract aspects and themes throughout. Some could be interpreted as aboriginal; others are still basic and spacious. Some materials used are paper cut outs in different shapes in different photograms. Some appear to look like cut out of human shapes.
I think that his pieces are different to the way I like to do photograms because he uses very abstract objects to most artists and have different meaning and purpose behind them.
